Tales of the Black Dog

It’s been a long year and two months, but the Sea Dog’s second CD is at the manufacturer, getting spun into fine little silver discs. It’s definitely a time for celebration for us. It’s been a long haul, but so very worth it. Seems like a good time to drop down memory lane and take a look at all of the many changes that have happened since the first CD came out.

Who’s That?

The makeup of the band has changed a lot. We lost a member and gained four new ones, expanding both the talent and fun, but also the sheer sonic possibilities.

Joe Heller plays guitar and bass and loves singing. He has added to the set several traditional shanties, some of which we had wanted to do for some time.  His bass chops are amazing, and he has since transferred his skills from the electric bass to the upright bass and has quick become a damned fine upright player. The addition of the bottom end to our songs has added a lot to the music. So much so, that we had to re-record one of our fan-favorites (The Sea)

Lonnie Ezell played guitar and sang when he joined the group, but has since added both the Low-D and High-D ‘penny whistle’ to the band. There have been numerous occasions when friends or fans have commented that they couldn’t believe he’d only been playing it for a year. The additional melody instrument adds fun frills in places, and deep support in others.

Mark Hughey brings some of the most kick-ass drumming you’ll ever hear to our sets. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get much of a chance to really show off his chops with us currently, but there’s always the possibility for something in the future. Back in the hey-dey of glam-rock, he worked with a number of recording artists including Don Henley, Cinderella, and the Eagles when he wasn’t playing in his own bands.

Diana Buie (DJ) is a music lover, song writer, and fiddler of over 15 years. She plays fiddle and cello, drums, dances and sings with various groups, including singing and fiddling in the Celtic band Queen’s Gambit. She plays the fiddle like Johnny himself, and has an incredible voice. (Heck, she plays so good that we got past our sailorly superstitions and let a woman aboard ship!)

An Evolving Sound

With the addition of so many new musicians, the type and styles of our music has evolved. We still do the music that you have grown to love, but we’ve been able to add new depths and layers to it. The music has grown up a little, I guess you could say. We’ve added a bit of rock, and a bit of blue-grass, to the list of inspirations.

We asked our friends on Facebook who we reminded them of, musically, after previewing a few of the new songs. No one was able to pin it down, but most of the bands mentioned were classic rock bands, including the Eagles. We’re thrilled to be thought of in the same vein as those giants. When we talk about our sound among ourselves, the songs evoke feelings of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Though none of the songs are truly one of these bands or another. Everything we do, we do in our own way, adding our own twists.

We’re still the same band you love, just better.

Just Around the Corner

With the CD at the manufacturer, that means the time when you’ll be able to get your own copy to add to your treasure chest is just around the corner.

We hope you enjoy it.

ElvenDrums confirmed for Nathan P. Murphy’s

Elven Drums, a wonderful band that we had the great pleasure to meet and jam with during VisionCon last weekend, has been confirmed to open for us at the Nathan P. Murphy’s show on February 20th. This is going to be one of the most unique concert experiences that you will ever have, so be sure to mark your calendars!

If you weren’t able to be at VisionCon, you can hear some bootlegged songs that were recorded by a local podcaster (thanks Rob!). The sound quality on the first few songs isn’t fantastic but it gets much better after that. It kicks off with a few songs around the Sea Dogs booth, then we got kicked out of the main area because the gamers couldn’t hear themselves (darn pirates!) and moved into the ballroom, where the Sea Dogs, Elven Drums and Bruce from Queen’s Gambit jammed for about an hour, trading songs and improving.

The event itself will be sponsored by Captain Morgan’s Rum. We’ll kick off the event at 8PM and stop when we can’t sing no more (or when they kick us out). There is a $5 cover charge

There be a new lass on board

You be hearin’ that right, scoundrels. The Captain brought a new lass on board the ship, and a fine lass she be. She be a vicious fiddle player and we be proud to be havin’ her aboard. You’ll be hearin’ her on the new CD for sure, and it will be worth the waitin’.

DJ is a music lover, song writer, and fiddler of over 15 years. She plays fiddle and cello, drums, dances and sings with various groups, including singing and fiddling in the Celtic band Queen’s Gambit.

Back to Sea

Hello friends,

Sven is back out at sea once more.  He will return on the 10th and is looking forward to seeing you all at Nathan P Murphy’s on the 20th of February.

Big Al’s was a blast!

We had an absolute blast at Big Al’s this weekend, mateys! We feel that it was one of our best shows to date, and we want to thank all of our new friends for making it such a great time.

Big Al’s is a restaurant/bar (that just happens to serve some of the best pirate drinks around). Everyone was there eating, so we had a captive audience. It was a joy to see everyone enjoying the music, too, by clapping and whistling and occasionally even singing along where they could. As a musician, the second greatest joy (behind playing the music you love) is having an active audience that takes part in the show. Saturday was definitely one of those nights.

We had several people come up to use afterword and tell us that their initial reaction upon hearing it was a ‘pirate band’ was quite skeptical. As one man put it, “When a friend said, ‘Lets go see this pirate band’ I said sure, why not. I figured I would stay for 2 or 3 songs then leave. But those 3 songs became 5, then 7, then 10. It was so refreshing to hear music that wasn’t the same old rock cover tunes you always hear. I had an absolute blast!” We hear this at nearly every show, and it makes our night!

We also had a guest fiddler with us who did a spot-on job even though she had never played most of the songs before. From what I could hear in my corner, and from what we heard from the audience, she did a beautiful job. Thanks, DJ! We know that she plays with a couple of other bands, including Queen’s Gambit, but rumor has it that she’ll be lending her skills to a few songs on the new album and even playing shows with us when she can.

Remember, we’ll be playing in at VisionCon in Springfield, MO, this coming weekend, then at Nathan P Murphy’s in February. So, if you didn’t get to catch us this time around, you’ll have plenty of chances coming up. Be there or walk the plank!

Big Damn Show!!

Don’t Forget about our “BIG DAMN SHOW” Nathan P. Murphy on Feb 20th!! It will be hosted by Captain Morgans Rum!! Feb. 20th 8pm 21 and over!!

New Gigs Page

We’re in the process of getting our Gigs page fine-tuned a bit to make things easier for you to find out where we’ll be playing next. It’s still in the formative stages, and we’re still working out some kinks, but head on over to http://seadogsmusic.com/events/ to view the next couple of gigs.

Halloween Bash

While we announced it over on Facebook, we realize that we completely forget to let our site visitors know about our Halloween house concert! It was a blast, thanks to Ezra and Dilly, Queen’s Gambit, and a number of friends that took part in the event. We had a pot luck “dinner”,  and costume party, while playing music for/with friends.

One of the coolest things, though, is that we didn’t want to keep all of the fun to ourselves. Oh no! The entire thing was broadcast live to the world over at Justin.TV. If you head over that way, you should be able to catch the archives. We had several fans on throughout the night, including a new fan (as far as we know) from Brazil. And that, right there, is why we’ll continue to do these live house parties from time to time. The ability to share your music and your time with people around the world, and to be able to interact with them in real-time, is such an amazing thing for musicians. What an exciting time we live in, and things are just getting started!

Within the next few days, we’ll be opening up an area of the website called the “Backstage Pass” which will grow as time goes on to continue all sorts of freebies, contests and more to our fans. But shows like this are the real reason to sign up. By being a Backstage Pass member, we’ll be able to send out emails and let you know about upcoming shows and live events like these. We hope that, next time, you’ll be there with us!

Travel Channel

The Dogs will be on the Travel Channel Wends. Sept 23rd 7pm Central Time.

Diego in the Hospital

It is with very heavy hearts that we tell you that John “2 Bears” Hernandez, otherwise known as Diego in the band, went into the hospital yesterday. After going through a number of tests, it was determined that he has kidney problems and is starting dialysis today.

We’re hoping for a quick and successful recovery on his part. While they are asking not to have any visitors at this time, we know that they appreciate all of your well-wishes, energy, and prayers.
